Wood with wood fortification!!
The Special (what's the diff between this and the ultralite?) See the explanation.
This delightful little paddle is all wood, no composites whatsoever, has nice flex, a very comfortable 'woodsy' feel, and absolutely the nicest paddling tool available. The blade is available in either the Paddlemaster shape (lower profile), or the standard blade shape. The upper portion of the powerface is slightly rolled over for enhanced water dynamics. The blade is wrapped in Ash. This paddle is HORC safe!!
How does this paddle compare with the ultralite? It is approximately the same weight and flex, with a little softer feel. There is no glass. The shaft is the same. The difference is in the blade. The Ultralite is mostly cedar, and is sandwiched between light 2 ounce fiberglass cloth (epoxied). The Special has no glass, and is laminated with Pine, Basswood and Walnut.
Ultralite and special: what's the diff?
At this point there is not a lot. They are about the same weight and feel, and are made nearly the same way. The big difference is that the Special has no glass and needs no glass. The way the blade is constructed it is very stiff and lightweight, as well as durable. Bandings of black walnut and ash, along with stiffening laminates in the blade and a special plate along the back of the spine help to create this interesting and very function effect.
