Laminated mostly from western red cedar, with harder woods in areas that are crucial to have harder woods (tulip, for instance, and ash edges wrapped around blade), this paddle is light and beautiful. This paddle comes with a very thin veneer of epoxied glass. All ultralite are glassed! The Speedstick (Paddlemaster blade style) is available also, $170 19 - 20 oz. The ultralite has the same shape as the standard blade.
Ultralite and special: what's the diff?
At this point there is not a lot. They are about the same weight and feel, and are made nearly the same way. The big difference is that the Special has no glass and needs no glass. The way the blade is constructed it is very stiff and lightweight, as well as durable. Bandings of black walnut and ash, along with stiffening laminates in the blade and a special plate along the back of the spine help to create this interesting and very function effect.
